Ethical practice award for United boss. #mufc

Sir Alex Ferguson has become a recipient of the renowned 'Tor Vergata Ethics In Sport Award' from the Tor Vergata University, in Rome, Italy. The Scotland born and bred football manager was praised for the way he handled the humbling 19th Barclays Premier League title win and being gracious in defeat to FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League Final. The gaffer gave a speech to students upon accepting the prestigious gift.

Ferguson is closing in on his 25th year at Manchester United, having 37 competitive trophies to his name and even more with previous Scottish clubs St. Mirren and Aberdeen. In total, he has won 48 titles as a footie boss. In his playing career, he featured for Queen's Park, St. Johnstone, Dunfermline Athletic, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United, before starting his management spell in charge of East Stirlingshire, and later coaching the Scotland national team.

He has presided over more than 2,000 matches as a manager, the majority of them (1,400) with United. He still looks as hungry as ever, and recently recieved the Barclays Manager Of The Month award for August. Sir Alex gratefully accepted the 'Ethics In Sport Award' from the Tor Vergata college in Rome, and spoke of his personal experience as manager of one of the greatest football clubs of all time.

Italian players' association president Damiano Tommasi - former Roma midfielder - presented Mr. Ferguson with the accolade which he previously benefited from. Former winners of the gong include current UEFA President Michel Platini, former Roma President Franco Sensi, football manager Zdenek Zeman, and cross-country skier Stefania Belmondo. Fergie stands out as one of the only holders outside of Italy to be awarded the prize.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already seen off a few pretenders to his Manchester United throne - and he intends to repel a few more even though he will celebrate his 70th birthday later this year.  It will be 25 years since Ferguson was appointed United manager on November 6. It is also nearly a decade since he performed an abrupt U-turn on his retirement plans.

What has followed, in addition to five more Premier League titles and another Champions League triumph, has been a guessing game about when Ferguson will eventually call it a day.

With that, comes the topic of his successor.   At various times, Bryan Robson, Steve McClaren, Mark Hughes, Martin O'Neill and a host of top continental bosses have been linked with the job.  Current favourite to replace Ferguson is Jose Mourinho, although a mounting disciplinary crime sheet at Real Madrid is not helping his cause.  Yet, speaking to the Italian media at an awards ceremony at University of Rome Tor Vergata, Ferguson confirmed he is going nowhere.

"Over the years I've had the question who do I think could replace me? Now in those years, some of the coaches they were talking about to replace me don't have jobs any more.

"So it becomes very difficult because someone who I think has potential may be sacked by his club and disappear.

"I think you would need someone very experienced in the long term. But I have absolutely no idea... first of all, I'm not retiring."

With Arsene Wenger's crown slipping badly in recent times, Ferguson is unquestionably the most powerful manager in England. At United, his authority over team matters is absolute. It is impossible to imagine any player being bought or sold without his agreement, although he does not always get his man.

"There's only one certainty: I will always be in charge.
"I wanted Maldini. I asked his dad Cesare about Paolo and he told me I was crazy."

Nobody told Ferguson he was crazy for trying to sign Wesley Sneijder in the summer and for a long time, even the Dutchman thought he would end up at Old Trafford.

Eventually, Ferguson decided the sums did not add up given he was not the like-for-like replacement for Paul Scholes he had been after."Sneijder is not the ideal replacement for Scholes," he said.

"He's a fantastic player but he was not who we were looking for to replace Scholes. Only Xavi and Iniesta are comparable to Scholes."

Images capture unprecedented performance against Arsenal.

My favourite image blog has some really top quality pictures from Old Trafford last Sunday.  I was in the Stretford End and I didn't touch my seat for the whole match.  What a great day out it was!  I'm off to the Reebok Stadium on the 10th September as the reds face Bolton in their second away fixture of the season.

Anyway, here are some pics from the Arsenal game enjoy!

Access card and membership finally arrives! #mufc

I finally recieved my paper ticket for the Tottenham Hotspur match, my membership pack and most importantly my season ticket for the coming English Premier League 2011/12 season.  I can relax now and look forward to the Monday night football at Old Trafford.  It's the first home game of the season and I'm rather excited.  I bought my ticket late so the seat which will be mine this year had already been allocated as a single ticket. Therefore I shall be in the East stand as opposed to the Stretford End for just this One game.   It should be a top-notch match, Spurs having quality players and a fluid, attractive style of play.  It's a game I always look forward to and United have a good record at home against the side now under Harry Redknapp.   I shall try to get some decent pics of my members and season ticket holders packs at some point, and post them forthwith.

Rio Ferdinand's USA Tour 2011 Diary #mufc

Here is some pre-season behind the scenes footage of Manchester United players.

The pre-season tour was a resounding success.  Almost everyone in the squad is playing well and United beat all-comers, including an MLS all stars team featuring David Beckham and Thierry Henry. The reds also defeated Barcelona 2-1 in a game of very high quality. The Barca team featured Iniesta, Pedro, Villa and Busquets as well as new sensation Thiago Alcantara.

The young Paul Pogba. #mufc

Manchester Uniteds French central midfielder is currently among the reserve team.  He has had a good season last year and is looking to break into the 1st team this year.   Pogba is a tall player whos' style reminds me of Patrick Viera, whom he played against in the Paul Scholes testamonial during the pre-season.  He has a terrific shot on him and carries the ball well, combining good close control and incisive passing. I hope he will get some premier league minutes from Sir Alex Ferguson this year and I think he will definately figure in the Carling Cup.
So here's a little video to show some of the exciting attributes possessed by yet another United Academy player.

Celtic Legends vs Manchester United Legends.

A charity match is to be played between the sides in aid of Oxfam's East Africa Appeal. Following the failure of the late 2010 rains, large parts of the Horn and East Africa region are facing the world's worst food crisis. Oxfam's response includes providing urgently needed clean water and feeding families.

Legends of both clubs and the entertainment world will be taking part in the match. Already confirmed are players such as Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Dwight Yorke, Gordon Strachan, Patrick Kielty, Richard Ashcroft, Ricky Hatton, Nigel Benn, Angus Deayton, Ricky Whittle and Nicky Byrne. Billy Connolly, the Patron of the Celtic Foundation, will be at Celtic Park on the night, and a host of other confirmed as lending support to the event and the fundraising effort are Wayne Rooney, Rod Stewart, Eddie Jordan, Sharleen Spiteri, Dougray Scott and Paolo Nutini.
The line up has swelled further this week with the addition of Manchester United hero Roy Keane. For Keane – who made 326 appearances for Man U scoring 33 goals – the return to Celtic Park will bring back memories of his final season as a player. He returns to Celtic on the eve of his 40th birthday and will surely be looking for a victory to put the icing on his celebrations. The former Ireland international played 10 times for Celtic FC in the 2005/2006 season before retiring on medical grounds.
Truly deserving of his place in The Legends, Alex Ferguson has said of Keane: “Over the years when they start picking the best teams of all time, he will be in there.”
Exec producer Lester Holcombe said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have secured Roy to play. For many of the fans he’s the greatest midfielder that Man U ever had. He never took any prisoners and we’re fully expecting him to bring that same competitive edge to this game.”
Celtic manager Neil Lennon said: "This is a great cause and one we should all support. The charitable spirit and generosity of our supporters is well known and we’re sure our fans will once again lend their backing to support the many thousands of people in Africa who need our help.

F.A. Community shield 2011

It was great to see the reds out in whats the first game of the season if you like.  It may only be a friendly but as last year, everyone wants to win this game. Sir Alex started with a full strength lineup of De Gea - Smalling, Rio, Vidic, Evra - Young, Carrick, Anderson, Nani - Rooney, Welbeck.

07/08/2011 16:15, Report by Nick Coppack at Wembley

City 2 United 3

New players, same old spirit. Sir Alex Ferguson handed four players competitive debuts at Wembley in the Reds' injury-time Community Shield victory on Sunday, but despite the fresh faces United displayed the same never-say-die attitude that has become the hallmark of the manager's modern teams.
In the space of six second-half minutes, goals from Chris Smalling and Nani turned around a two-goal deficit and seized back the momentum Manchester City had stolen at the end of the first period. Then, with the match in the fourth minute of injury time and seemingly poised for penalties, Nani charged down a Vincent Kompany clearance on the halfway line, sprinted clear, rounded Joe Hart in the City goal and slid the ball home to clinch the season's first piece of silverware.
Many had written United off by half-time after goals from Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko – albeit against the run of play – had given the Blues what looked to be an unassailable lead. But changes at the break, including the introduction of debutants Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley, prompted a United fightback that epitomised the strength of character Sir Alex so often speaks of.

For me the best players were Nani and Anderson but really everyone did quite well.  Tom Cleverley was excellent when he came on, he thwarted citys' counter-attacks and managed an assist in one of the sexiest goals I've ever seen.
Check out this gif, credit to the author whoever they are!

So are we still desperate for another midfield genius to be signed? Or have we just seen one in the making?

Paul Scholes' Testamonial.

Paul Scholes played his last game for Manchester United in front of 75,000 fans last night.  Every seat in Old Trafford was filled, and Paul Scholes couldn't deny how much he is loved by the United fans.  None other than Pele and United legend Eric Cantona put a team together to face the reds, representing New York Cosmos in their first match in many years.  Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Dwight Yorke were wearing the Cosmos for this friendly, as well as Patrick Viera who was soundly booed every time he went near the ball.  Actually I was glad he played because it only added to the atmosphere.

In these games I always hope the player being honoured plays well, although Scholes almost always does. Therefore I shouldn't have been surprised when The Genius struck a thunderous 25 yard shot right into the top corner after 20 minutes of play! It was just perfect and Scholesey went on to spray long passes all over the pitch. He really could have bagged a hat-trick to be honest and when he was subbed after 75 minutes he really didn't look ready to come off. The youngsters came on and took over from a full strength starting line up, finishing the game off at 6-0 to the reds. Danny Welbeck, Anderson, Wayne Rooney (pen) and  Mame Diouf (x2) were the goalscorers.

We will never really replace a player such as Paul Scholes but he can rest assured he has given us some amazing memories and will never be forgotten.

Welcome!

Hello there,
I would like to welcome you and introduce you to my new Manchester United blog.

My plan is to bring to you news, opinion and media relating to the mighty reds.  I hope that I can convey my great love for the beautiful game and of course; Fergies' boys!  Manchester United are the most famous football club in the world and Sir Alex Ferguson may just be the greatest manager of all time.  For as long as I can remember he has steered the reds to many a trophy and unearthed wonderful talents along the way. He truly has brought the greatest players in the world to play in the humble city of Manchester, whether these players were working for or against us I will always be gratefull for that. I doubt I'd have seen the likes of Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo, or even Lionel Messis' great Barcelona playing down the road, if not for the work Sir Alex has done.

So in the coming weeks I hope to share my personal experiences and feelings, and share stories about the Reds'  upcoming season.  "From the banks of the irwell...."
